During the roof inspection, we check whether the old waterproofing is still bonded to the base, whether there is moisture underneath and how water reaches the drains. Based on this, we propose a local repair, a new layer over the old membrane or stripping the layers back to the base.
We form the upstands at the parapets and the connections around drains, vents and chimneys with extra strips of membrane, and we cap the parapets with sheet-metal copings – this is where it is decided whether the roof stays dry.
Technical detail: moisture under the membrane
If there is wet thermal insulation or screed under the old waterproofing, a new membrane traps that moisture from above. The sun turns it into vapour, which blisters the membrane and lifts it off, so wet layers are removed, not covered over.

Yes, if the old one is well bonded to the base and there is no moisture underneath. Individual blisters are cut out and re-bonded, but if there are many loose areas or the thermal insulation is wet, the layers are removed. Otherwise, the problem comes back.
A flat roof needs a slight fall towards the drains. Puddles that stay for days mean a sunken base, the wrong fall or a blocked drain – this is corrected before the new waterproofing goes on.
For an exposed flat roof, the usual solution is a bitumen membrane. Liquid waterproofing is practical where there are many penetrations and complex details that a membrane is hard to fit around.
In dry weather and on a dry base. In severe cold, bitumen membrane becomes brittle, so large repairs are planned outside the winter months, while urgent leaks are contained locally.
For roofing work and roof waterproofing, the warranty is 6 years, with a written certificate.
