Roof insulation in Varna

We insulate the roof space – thermal insulation between and under the rafters or across the loft floor, with a vapour barrier that keeps moisture from the home out of the insulation.

Scope and approach

What you get

If the loft is not used, it usually makes more sense to insulate its floor rather than the roof slopes – the area is smaller and the insulation is easier to lay. In an attic room, the insulation follows the slope of the roof and is closed in with a vapour barrier and lining.

Before we start, we check that the roof is dry and that there is a vapour-permeable membrane and ventilation above the insulation. Insulation under a roof that leaks or cannot breathe gets wet and loses its effect.

Technical detail: the vapour barrier

If the vapour barrier has gaps, moisture from the warm air in the home condenses in the cold part of the insulation. That is why the membrane goes on the inside, the laps are taped and the cable penetrations are sealed.

  • Mineral wool between the rafters and a second layer beneath them to prevent thermal bridging
  • A vapour barrier with taped laps and sealed penetrations for cables and pipes
  • Insulation across the floor of an unused loft, with service walkways
  • Checking the roof membrane and the ventilation above the insulation
  • Removing and taking away old, wet or slumped insulation
  • Drywall lining in the attic room, ready for skim coating and paint
When to call us

From the problem to the solution

The most common situations people call us about, and how we approach them.

Common problems

  • A cold attic room in winter and stifling heat in summer
  • Mould and dark patches in the corners between the ceiling and walls on the top floor
  • Droplets on the underlay beneath the roof in cold weather
  • Old mineral wool that has slumped, got wet or been burrowed into by rodents
  • Polystyrene between the rafters with gaps that let the cold through

How we approach them

  • We lay the insulation in two layers with staggered joints
  • We take the insulation tightly up to the eaves and walls, where a corner is often left uncovered
  • We fit a vapour barrier on the warm side and a vapour-permeable membrane on the cold side
  • We replace wet insulation after removing the cause of the moisture
  • We fill tightly between the rafters with mineral wool, leaving no gaps or voids

A good fit when

  • When you are converting the loft into a living space
  • When the loft is not used and the top floor loses heat through it
  • When there is condensation or mould in the roof space
  • When you are replacing the roof covering and the insulation can be done at the same time

Process

How the work runs

We organise the work around the specifics of the city and the property, planning access, logistics and stages.

  1. Inspection of the roof space, the membrane and any signs of moisture

  2. Deciding whether to insulate the roof slopes or the floor, and choosing the thickness

  3. Removing the old insulation and preparing the base

  4. Laying the thermal insulation and the vapour barrier with taped laps

  5. Lining or service walkways, and a final review

Price

What affects the price

The price depends above all on whether you are insulating the roof slopes of an attic room or the floor of an unused loft, and on the thickness required.

The exact price is set after an inspection of the roof space.

  • Thickness and type of thermal insulation
  • Removing and taking away old insulation
  • Vapour barrier and sealing of penetrations

Questions and answers

Roof insulation in Varna: questions and answers

If the loft is not used, it is usually more effective and cheaper to insulate its floor. If it will be lived in, the insulation goes along the roof slopes.

To stop moisture from the home reaching the cold part of the insulation, where it condenses. Wet insulation loses its properties and leads to mould and rotting timber.

Yes, if the roof membrane is sound and the roof does not leak. If there is no membrane, the solution is decided at the site visit – sometimes work from outside is needed too.

No – it is hard to fit tightly and leaves gaps that let the cold through. Mineral wool is normally used there, as it fills the space and lets vapour pass through.

It depends on whether you are insulating the floor or the roof slopes, and on the energy-efficiency requirements. On the slopes, the thickness needed is usually greater than the depth of the rafters, so a second layer is laid beneath them.
